    Encoding

    Hello Gang,

I need some guidance about encoding. I've used Cleaner XL in the past and have now found that it doesn't support the Window Vista operating system... so i'm not sure if I want to pay the $600 to get the software and then have it not work properly. Since I'm getting back into the encoding game, I have a few Q's for peeps that encode.

    My questions:

    1) Is anyone out there using Cleaner XL with Vista, and experiencing any problems?

    2) Since I've been out of the encoding game for a while I also need some advice about what formats I should encode my content to. I'm rebuilding a few paysites and would like to offer multiple sizes and formats for downloading and also allow flash player viewing and ipod downloads. Is there some sort of industry standard out there for sizes and formats that I should be aware of? Any suggestions?

    3) Are there any other encoding products I should be aware of that is comparable to Cleaner XL?

    Thanks for your help!

    Kevin

    Thanks,
    Kevin

Cleaner is a piece. We've recently switched to Sorenson Squeeze and are happy with the move.

I'd recommend doing Flash 8 (VP6) and H.264 to cover all your bases. At some point in the future it might be an option to go H.264 only. Squeeze 5 for Flash Pro will do both of these.

Be aware that there is a a 1500 encode/mo limit with Squeeze after which you'll be limited to 50 encodes/day for the rest of the month. Not sure of Vista support but grab the demo and give it a shot. Or switch that junk OS up.

You'd be better off just not using Vista. I am quite happy with Win XP for all my video editing and encoding apps. I use Cleaner XL 1.5 every day and it is a very useful app. But Sorenson Squeeze is also a great app for batch video encoding, as is Adobe Flash Encoder. These different apps have different strengths and weaknesses and I use certain of these apps for different video formats and jobs.

Cool, thanks for your advice. So, if I encode the downloads to H.264, these can be viewed in any player... QT, WMV... etc.? Can anyone else chime in and let me know if they're doing the same for their encoding and if you'd recommend it too?

        Thanks,
        Kevin

I use Movkit Batch Video Converter Pro. It's cheap and does the job. It can handle a ton of formats to and from. The app could be written a bit better, but it's simple, and does the job. It will crash if you load to many videos to be converted at once, I wouldn't load up more then 75-100 to be converted at a time. I'll grab 10 WMV's, and drag them it, set them to convert to MOV, and then drag the same WMV's in again and set them to convert to MPEG, etc...

As far as converting to FLV, Flash comes with a converter, and it seems to be the best one I have found so far. It can handle batching too.

As far as formats, the mains seem to be WMV, MOV, MPEG and Flash or Real for streaming.

Bitrates: it depends on what you want to handle, DeviceBondage is backed by the biggest fetish producer Kink, and they offer a little over 700k, I see others offering 1000k+.
