are pop ups profitable?

I mean adding a pop up/pop under etc to my website. Website get most traffic from search engines, not made for bookmarkers, so I am thinking of adding one pop up to it.
What would be the best thing to promote in that pop up?

If you see big programs doing something in adult you *know* they are making money from it and all major programs have popup links.

Hard to say without seeing your site but you could try something that offers a few more links in the niche you are promoting as well as some links for totally different niches.

Also popup killers are much more effective today, and if you get a script to make your popup work then alot of people will close the window really quickly anyway. Most people knows that popup = advertisement...

I wouldent use them they annoy the surfer and If i go to a site that has popups I just close the whole site down plus as the guy above said a lot of people who use popup blockers wont even see them

what about pop ups that shows only after surfer close main site. The surfer is lost (as I said site is not made for bookmarkers) and you have a second chance to sell something (or use some email sponsor)

As a surfer I do not care for the pop-up ad. However there is one site that I visit from time to time that has a full page pop-under that is not annoying. It is a regular web page with photos and banner ads that link to similar content by the same producers of the initial site. I usually will click on some of those links to see additional updated free content.

On my sites every link to another site opens in a new window so that my sites will always be displayed until a surfer actually closes them.

POP-UPS are bad, POP-UNDERS are better but still it's not way to go.

You don't earn much and You loose most of Your returning visitors, that are making You sales with paysite sponsors or dating.

So in reality and in long run You are losing money.

I am testing a CSS popup, This only gets loaded every fifth user click on my page. And the pop up goes away after 5 seconds.

Yep. Returning visitors make sales (TGP site recycling visitors have terrible conversion). And pop-ups are best way to get rid of them. Then You can daily promote site and You'll make only few sales a month.

Yes pop them over or under, and use a relevant but alternative niche/site.

no, pop ups are only good to annoy the web surfer. Unless you can find a program that does a pay per impression, which is hard to find now.
