Making the switch from parking to affiliate programs

I've been parking my adult sites and making about $10k a month, but I think I'm leaving money on the table by not developing out.

    Any suggestions?

Used to use affiliate programs until the 2257 law came out - when so many affiliate programs said they wouldn't release required info until the point where the feds where at your door (and then who knew if said affiliate prg would actually give you access to that data), I thought it was all too much hassle and switched to parking. I also had barely marketed any of my sites, relying on type-in traffic b/c I was lazy since the money was easy, so I focused on my mainstream sites.

Now I'm finally looking to really rev up my income and take advantage of my premium domains by developing and promoting my sites using affiliate programs. Tons of experience with this in mainstream, but not with adult. I'm sure much has changed over the past few years and I feel lightyears behind.

How are U.S. webmasters handling 2257 issues? Is it still as big of a deal as it seemed when it first came out?

What different promotional methods apply in the adult world as opposed to mainstream?

Is blogging a good way of getting adult traffic (or of developing an adult site)?

How can you know which affiliate programs are truly trustworthy (no shaving, pay on time, etc)?

I'd really appreciate any suggestions on making the move from parking my domains to developing them. It will definitely be a lot more work, but I think (hope) that ultimately I can make tons more money than I am now...

I've got sites in many different niches (giant tits, black, anal, fetish, gay, straight, asian, etc etc)

Thanks all for any help you can provide!

        compliance

I think you are taking the proper approach and looking into compliance. also keep this in mind you are leaving money on the table, you need to really keep your proccessing fee's down and your revenue should go up 15% on the low side, e-mail me at [email protected]

ely123 - i just sent you an email

thanks everyone for suggesting some sponsors. however, I'm more interested in hearing advice on actually developing the domains instead of just plain parking them.

thanks in advance for any help GFY folks can provide -- I'm excited to get going on these projects!

I'd say that smaller sites and blogs get away with being lax on the 2257 -- doesn't mean they won't get slapped for it but it's rare to see a blog with all of the legal bells and whistles in place. Most just refer you back to the 2257 pages from their sponsors. The panic mode is over but that doesn't mean you couldn't end up being the example if they decided to move in on your sites for some reason.

What different promotional methods apply in the adult world as opposed to mainstream?

Basically they're both about bringing in quality traffic. In adult you have TGPs and link dumps but it's still all about finding your audience and getting them to click, just like mainstream.

Is blogging a good way of getting adult traffic (or of developing an adult site)?

Everyone blogs. Not everyone makes money or pulls in traffic. It's what you put into it. Blogging is fast and simple and search engines love blogs - they seem to get indexed faster than websites so that's an advantage. The downside, if you don't update regularly with unique content you lose that advantage and very quickly. Blog readers are a fickle lot. If you miss a couple of days they'll move on and not come back.

How can you know which affiliate programs are truly trustworthy (no shaving, pay on time, etc)?

Ah, well, there's nothing but word of mouth, really. Visit the boards, see what people are saying. If 20 people say bad for every 1 that says good, maybe you should steer clear. But things happen and people have axes to grind. You may have to try a couple of programs before you find one that works for you. And a program that's great today may not work out a year from now. It's a very fluid business. Scan the boards for a couple of days and you'll see which affiliate programs know what they're doing and which ones don't.

Final note - parking isn't the best solution for all domains but it may be for some. If you have good type-in names, maybe you should give DDC.com another look. We park kinky.com, 69.com, to name a few. Often there is a higher return on a developed domain but it may not be enough of a boost to justify the work that goes into putting up and keeping up a developed site.

              Cynthia,

Thanks very much for taking the time to provide such a detailed and lengthy response -- it is greatly appreciated!

May I ask whose feed DDC.com uses for their adult sites? And how do you feel DDC does in adult compared to Skenzo (which also has very high traffic sites like tits.com)? What revshare percentage do you offer to your customers?

              Thanks again for your help!

We use Yahoo for our feeds and our revenue shares start at 75% but what we do best is handle portfolios on a case by case basis, just as (hopefully) your stock broker would, were you to hand him a portfolio of valuable stocks and bonds.

I'd like to hook you up with our president, Sean Moriarty. He used to run Yahoo's domain business until 4 months ago and so he has a very good understanding of the space. You can talk PPC, development. . .again, we're not a one-size fits all parking company. We'll develop if we think it will bring in a better profit in the long run.

ICQ me if you'd like to talk about the possibilities 299-226-980 or email cynthia (at) ddc.com.
