I started a blog a few weeks ago with similar intent. It is now up to a few hundred unique visitors a day. I am no dynamo like some of the folks around here, but I am happy with my initial results.
It is on its own domain, though, and I have been careful with choice of link exchanges. Many here will suggest that all links are equal. I just don't buy that.
Slow and steady seems to be better in the long term than popping a site that launches with 2000 recip links. The search engines have picked up my blog and we are number one with one term (not a hugely fought for term, though) and are in the first couple pages on google for other terms.
Time and effort seem to be the most important factors.
Not sure how you can really get noticed being a part of someone elses domain.
You are, with your efforts, driving traffic to their site. Get your own, spring for the 6 buck registry fee and the 12 bucks a month. Make it your traffic.
Also, their age verification requires 3 -5 clicks just to get to the main site.
