    Streaming Help

I have recently posted about trading content, and streaming...or something...
I am not sure where this question would go, guess it's here!

---I am currently setup to just downloads of WMVs...was wondering...what's the easiest way to restrict downloading, and get a stream going for my members?
    Thanks!

I can tell you this from hard learned experience: Stopping people from downloading movies fucking pisses them off. That said, here are some possible solutions for ya:

Find a host who uses Window Media Services (aka Windows Media Server), then read up on how to encode video as true streaming, not just progressive download. (Search for: How to Use Windows Media Encoder)

Find a host who uses Real Networks and then you use Real Producer (that the name I knew six years ago, may have changed) to create streaming videos.

Encode your movies as Flash movies and stream them that way. This might be the way to piss off the least amount of people and be the most cost effective.

Use DRM to protect your movies, that way they can download them but can't trade them. This will piss off goddamn near everyone, but especially Mac users, who won't be able to watch any of your movies.

All that said, I would not try to restrict people from sharing your stuff. I did it when I first started my site -- tried to prevent people from sharing stuff -- and it was a huge fuck up. Cost me tons of money in lost customers.

But do what you think is best. Everyone's method can't be the same and what works for you, well, works for you.
