$2K will get you a D200 but not much else. If you go with a D80, you can buy a badass lens and speedflash with it. Awesome camera.

Well these days you can get a D200 body for $1500 or less and that still leaves enough money for some good lenses, but I agree with the overall logic. Get the D80 since the difference between in it and the D200 is marginal and both are great, then you can put the $500-600 savings on even better glass. That's what I did in November 06. I don't regret it. I'll upgrade when the newsest version of D200 comes out (D300 maybe?) and use the D80 as a backup. These cameras are both great and won't be obsolete for a long, long time.

If you're a novice, get the D40 or D40x. Spend the rest of it on glass, and then upgrade to a D200 if you need the features and speed.

Also, see the suggestions at www.kenrockwell.com

i use a canon rebel xti for stills and a sony hdr-hc1 for video. both produce excellent quality. the kit lens that comes with the rebel isn't very good so i upgraded to the canon 24-70 f2.8L and it kicks ass!

i heard the d200 comes in a kit with the 18-200 DX VRII lens which is a great all round lens...
