1024x768?

What screen resolution are you all designing to? My non-porno stats show 1024x768 to be the most common visiting resolution, but it seems like an awful waste of space to leave all of that extra space on my widescreen monitor just sitting there!

you can either design it to expand with larger resolutions, or just stick to that size. I too have a lot of extra space on my laptop screen, but I'd rather I have extra space and it shows perfect for the viewers, rather then I have it fit my screen, and my viewers have to scroll sideways.

the best would be not scrolling sideways at 800x600

I go with 1024 by 768 and, embarassingly enough, I base this is on what Yahoo is doing. When they were 800x600, I was 800x600. When they bumped up a resolution, I bumped up. I figure, hell, they're the ones with the best stats.

I think 1024 is what most people use and it's what I use to design my sites.

Design it using CSS so that it "degrades gracefully" when used at a lower resolution than 1024x768, that is, it is still usable, but might not look the same as you intended. I personally believe 800x600 is well on the way out by now, and 1024x768 is becoming the baseline standard, but unfortunately there are still people out there using 800x600 - but that doesn't mean you should cater exclusively for them and piss away the screen estate of the vast majority who have a bigger resolution.

Scrolling Sucks

Scrolling sucks. Goes against all user interface design maxims. 8x6 should not even be an option these days.
