    make users click?

I have an idea where you have a tgp set up and if users click on the thumbs they acquire points. They then can use these points to view movie clips on the site or other things.

Does this sound like a decent idea, is it against any rules?

Sounds interesting, although your trades will definately not like the idea.

Just go with it anyway - perhaps you could ensure that the script only counts points on a unique once per gallery basis, but frankly if the trade hasn't got anything to keep the surfer on their site then it's their loss and your gain.

It's just like within the retail arena: other shops may bitch because rivals are "stealing" customers by offering cheaper prices or loyalty schemes, but the fault lies with them for not getting off their backside and offering the customer something to tempt them in.

Try using a cookie or sum shit to have users only do it once or twice then have to signup to keep viewing videos.. (as a tease)

Otherwise they'll just keep clicking away and keep watching for free, you'll never make $$$ that way
