Need some photography tips

I've finally started getting into doing my own photo and video shoots. Bought equipment and everything, but my photos are just not coming out right to me. I mean, I want to do the photography thing, just not for the site, but I really want to get good at this. Anyway, I've been looking at photos online and what not, and for the site, i'm trying to do it like they do.

For example:

This is a close up, but to me it appears a bit dark

This is dark, and I don't know why, I have two lights and the place was lite up like a fucking lighthouse. And the flash went off, now I know I must be fucking up. LOL

Here I adjusted the lighting and also edited her skin tone for a few blemishes. But somehow it still does not have that look that I want. Can someone help me out, tell me what I could be doing wrong. I have a Nikon D50. Any editing tips would be great also. And even with the lights, i'm still getting the shadows that I think the lights should of eliminated. Help me out please.
