    Dedicated or VPS Virtual Server?

Maybe someone can point me in the right direction here...

I am looking to go with a hosting provider (more than likely webair) rather than run out of my house. Right now I run a Windows based application and some PHP scripts. I run about 25 sessions of the Windows app so the CPU usage is always pegged at 100%. I run all this on a 3.2GHz / 2GB RAM / SCSI 15ks.

I have the choice of VPS Virtual Server and Dedicated Server. Obviously there is a price different - double for Dedicated. I understand the concept of VPS, but my question is this... Is the performance increase on a Dedicated Server that much better? Do they allocate resources on the VPS to "mimic" a Dedicated Server?

My intent for this server is basically for "internet marketing" - lol! Using applications/scripts to push traffic to affiliate sites.

    Your thoughts?

If you wanna rip my ass for posting a dumbass thread you can do that as well!

    Thanks,
    -Cyp

    Good question.

Hopefully someone can give a technical answer.

I went with dedicated just to be safe. And I have no money issues.

In a true VPS environment the host sets exactly the parameters that are allowed for each VPS session.

This typically includes CPU, MEM and Disk Space.

The VPS software itself takes a VERY negligble amount to run about 1-3% processing power.

So in theory going with a proper VPS package is fine, the problem is a lot of providers do not dedicated the VPS sessions.

So say you will slice a CPU into 4 parts and a sell a 1Ghz VPS session instead of a 4Ghz dedicated servers ( hypothetical example )

What you should do is sell only 4 packages of this type, so each user can use 100% at the same time without a problem.

The issue is they'll sell 20 of them And obviously you can see where a performance issue can arise, no one session can consume more than 25% of the total, but good luck getting to it.

I would say start with the cheapest and BEFORE YOU run into problems, but AFTER YOU start making $ - upgrade.

This forces you to have backups, build a scalable architecture, prepare for the worst and get exactly what you need.
