    forum software, phpbb sucks

I have had it, thousands of fake members joining my PHPBB forums and ruining it with fake posts and bs ads to gain SE rankings and more. Doesn't seem to be stoppable lol - what do you guys recommend that doesn't have such a BS flaw in it?

    Thanks all!

There's invision and vbulletin - I'm not sure how it compares to phpBB though. I have phpBB and have it so that no one can post without having the admins/mods approve of their registration. They still include their link into the memberlist though and I have disabled that feature so it's not crawled by the SE's.

Have you kept up with the security plugins and patches for phpbb?

I have used it on several sites and have always been happy with them. Its free and you have to ad updates from time to time.

run phpbb on a forum was having the same problem
here is the mods i used
          better_captcha

phpbb_active_member_urls_only_mod_1.0.0.mod , this mod sets it so that you can set it up so that a member must have X amount of post and have been a member for Y amount of days before they can post a url

vAgreement - vbulletin style agreement ,

Anti_Spam_ACP - you can change the registration data that is needed so tht only email and pass and username are needed at registration the rest of the garbage aint needed and need X amount of posts to fill out in the profile after registration

those combined and i have gotten no more spam bots

and lastly ,activation link in the email

doesn't matter what forum you use , they all suffer from the same problem or spam bots re: check this joint for example , bots galore

i also have signature control , same deal as the url mod , need X amount of posts and have been a member for Y days to get urls in the sig , or you can turn urls off in the sig all together

                VBulletin for sure.
I also tend to like Phorum quite a bit but it is a little low on features.

Antispam acp did it for me. I also killed the forum on robots.txt at least until it grows, no spiders, no SEO advantage to the spammers

Try Vanilla, http://www.lussumo.com/ it's rather unique.

Note: The community hasn't grown like PHPBB yet so there are nowhere near as many readily available plugins.

amateurcanada don't give up phpbb2 just yet. I hav ebeen experiencing the smae problems with spammers.

Obviously only allow members to post but also set the account activation to manual so that you or someone (human!) must approve the account. You can spot the spammers a mile off as their usernames are made up of random characters and their email addresses end in a spammy name such as "mind-info.com" or "cialisforever.info".

Since I took this measure I have had no more spam!

PPHBB rocks too! Pls let me know if you need any more help.
