freehost problem where to store banners

    Newbie question

I worked very hard to get my site listed on a number of toplists, and was very proud to see my banner there ... until it disappeared, because my free host does not allow others to link directly to non-html files on my site.

How does one solve this kind of problem?

get a cheap payhost instead if you're tired of freehosts.

When I went through my freehost phase I put my banners on the personal space that came as part of my internet connection package from my ISP - I don't know what their policy was on adult stuff but they never squawked at my banners and the load never exceeded whatever their bandwidth limit was.

A year ago when I asked questions like this everyone said "Dump the freehosts and get paid hosting -- you'll never regret it." Which I cheerfully ignored -- until I kept finding reasons I wished I was on paid hosting. Now I am. Bandwidth is so dang cheap these days, I wouldn't dream of using freehosts for anything except (possibly) really high bandwidth galleries with huge crap traffic.

          Thanx guys.

I will host my banners on a friends paid host :-)

This may seem silly to you guys who actually make a lot of money of your webmastering, but I made a decision not to invest any money I didn't earn from this activity.

So, when I start getting some signups - then I will pay for hosting.

I think most of understand what you are saying. I know that I started out on freehosts with the same attitude as you. However, that was back when they were new and still working out the rule. It reached a level where worrying about the headaches related to freehosting was costing me more money in time management than getting a paid host. I also got worried that the hijinks of the freehosts was unfairly damagine my reputation.

Also, now adays you can get hosting for as low as 50 cents a gig..gee I would have killed for that when I was newbie. What is even better is that there are hosts where you only pay for the bandwith you use. Sort of like a pay as you go hosting plan. I love that.

So, sure learn the ropes on freehosts but then get out there and dip your toe.

Absolutely. Understand completely the impulse to stick with freehosts for now -- had it myself, cheerfully ignored advice to switch to paid hosting, did my own thing, and learned some stuff.

Not suggesting you switch now -- just suggesting that the day will come, faster than you think, and when it does, you'll be beating palm against forhead wishing it had come several months sooner.

Paying fifty cents a gig right now in the volume I am buying from cheapbw.com, and the clicks on my pay counter (foxcounters.com) alone are covering my bandwidth bill.

The light began to dawn for me when some of my pages began showing up in the search engines with good placement....and every last one of them was presented to the searcher with the title: "FREE PENIS ENLARGEMENT! Make your penis larger with these...."

For some odd reason, search engine traffic to those pages isn't what it might be.
