    Video bandwidth question?

Hey everyone, this is my first post here, i hope you guys can shed some light. I think i'm being extremely stupid, but i can't for the life of me work out the video bandwidth reality. Or maybe i can but i just don't believe it! If you take katesplayground.com (just as an example of a site with average video). An example video is one that is 17.2MB and 4:41mins in length, hence they broadcast their video at 61.21kbytes (using this video as an example). As far as i can see on most standard hosts (without spending huge sums of money) you will get use of up to maybe a 10mbits p/sec pipe, which is actually a 1.25mbyte p/sec pipe, which would hence allow about 20 people simultaneously viewing video before you ate up all the bandwidth (and that's using the full 10mbps data pipe). I was looking at one dedicated server which gives you a dedicated 1mbits p/sec pipe, which, assuming the above is right, would allow for only about 3 simultaneous users viewing video before using up all the bandwidth. The other option is companies like dreamhost.com who claim to offer 1 or 2 TB of bandwidth via 8 redundant Gigabit Ethernet (1000Mbps) shared, starting at $8/month. Which just seems so so cheap to me, worryingly so, given the amount of bandwidth.

I just wanted to ask, have i got this right, am i missing anything, if not how do most sites get away with using this amount of bandwidth without spending huge sums of money. Or are companies like dreamhost actually reliable enough for this purpose? Any thoughts/ideas really would be very much appreciated.

    Thanks very much,

    Dave

No dream host is not reliable, it is extremely over sold and that's why its quantity of traffic costs 10x more with any real host.

The 'real' world answers to your questions lie in the following. Even if 3 users would suck up all the bandwidth simultaneously, you can have 10 users and it would just be 3x as slow for everyone to stream. Many users choose to dl a full vid to their drive and then watch it. The other part of the equation is that 20 simul. users can equal 100-200 regular monthly members - so the more active users the more recurring non-active users who are out sleeping, shopping, or doing their own thing and not surfing the site.

Finally - you get what you pay for , if you dont find a different solution provider. Fully managed hosts are the best for mission critical stuff like affil. programs, members sites, and e-commerce stores. cheaper hosts are good for landing pages/traffic builders/free sites and such. Know your resources and use them wisely.
