You can buy any server you want but you will need to find a company that does managed co-location. (Which is what you will be doing if you purchase your own server and have them handle the rest. ex. setting up the os, ext.)

Unless you have a strong reason to buy your server rather than lease one, I'd suggest leasing first, for a couple reasons:

-- If you discover after shipping your server somewhere that your ISP is awful for one reason or another (downtime, crappy service response, whatever) you can simply lease another server from somebody else, move your files and DNS, and (if done right) have zero downtime. If you own the box, you'll either have to buy another one and set it up at the new ISP, or have downtime (hours or days) while moving your server from one ISP to another.

-- If you have a hardware problem with a leased box, a good ISP should be able to get it back up and running near instantly, or at least get you on to another box. If you own the box, you'll either have to go to the data center yourself to fix it, or pay some pretty high rates for "remote hands" to have someone else fix it for you.

-- This isn't always the case, but usually the ISPs who offer dedicated leased boxes have really good deals on bandwidth that you can't get for colocated boxes. I've never understood this, but it often seems to be the case.

We have used EV1Servers.net and ThePlanet.com/ServerMatrix.com for the past several years. At the moment, I'm a little more partial to Planet, but both seem to be pretty decent, have great uptime, and good support.

if you still want to buy a server, buy one of the dell SC series
but if you want the best, build your own
then find a datacenter and drop the server off, they'll handle the connections
