I am looking for a good software program for putting together an online store.

Check out digitalpressworks.com -- they have a free shoppingcart that's absolutely great. You can see it in action at http://www.frights.org

I've had a lot of success with Zen-cart, it's almost entirely MVC compliant (unlike OS Commerce which is a goddamn mess), and there's plenty of community support for it. The only possible problem I can forsee is the devs have stated the next version of the software will be a massive rewrite, and hence many stores will have to rewrite a number of their features. This is only really an issue if you plan on or have a really good reason to update - quite often it's a much better business decision to stick with the platform that's working for you rather than push for the "latest and greatest".
