pics looks good beacuse they have good quality and are taken with good camera, photoshop can just adjust some things (from filter you use only usharp mask, before opening pic, if is in raw format you can adjust exposure and color settings, depends of camera, normal jpegs you can adjust - image - adjustments - color, hue, saturation, contrast and unsharp mask filter, but you have to know how, which channel - RGB, CMYK - depends on pic configuration - you use, or which chanell you sharp, which you contrast, which you make curves or levels...) photoshop is very complex and powerfull program, who know, in few moves can do magic to pics on easy way, for start, take good quality photo taken in raw format and play with chanels, colors and other adjustments, leave filters alone

well, my english is not so good, but I work in ps for many years as i worked in photo studio so I know some things about retoushing (I do not know this word), you do not use filters to work about image, but you use chanels and adjustments, you use blur and sharpen filters, others are for atristic things

you can record action, but like you said, trere are no 2 identical photos, even in same serie you shoot two pics with different lightning, the answer is in raw camera format and camera settings so you can get pics with similar settings

it's not worth the time, except for making few pics or you want artistic photo for some magazine or something so you want one or few perfect pic, to many time for whole sets

you have to be masohist to do more then 30 pics

in PS...

1. filter > smart blur >
radius 1, threshold 10, quality low

2. brightness/contrast
brightness +20, contrast +5

if you crop your thumbs with these settings in mind, it works quite well without a plastic looking effect, for 90% or better of my thumbs.

for my galleries...i crop my pics with a smart-crop batch script using threshold values...it works very nicely in automatically selecting the "best" portion of the original pic, so i don't have to actually select the crop for each pic when creating the thumbs (which is a bitch).

i run both as a batch process, so i can create 100's (shit, 1,000s) of image thumb sets, each in their own folder, 16 images + thumbs. what i "lose" in 5%-10% not being "perfect", i gain in the fact that i can create 100's of unique galleries in less than 10 minutes (with a templating system for the php code and pulling random style sheets and the proper sponsor links, etc).

this doesn't include getting the sets and selecting the best 16 pics though...that's a pain in the ass. i just spend one day a week downloading the zips from the sponsors.
