I am looking to deploy a php-based platform for an online photo and dating site, which will include pictures, picture trading, private messaging, and a forum capability.

What is the ideal software for this application?

Yes, I set it up for a client. ( I do a lot of work like that: I just setup a hotel reservation system for a property in Costa Rica).

That program can seem at first expensive, but it has all the bells and the whistle. Works like a charm, and you have many " interfaces " you can modify/integrate to your design ...

I do also shopping carts. Often, the script is 250.00, then we have to add a " new additions " ( 50.00 ), then an easy navigation ( 60.00 ), an express checkout ( 80.00 ) , a SE friendly page generator ( 65.00 ) and so on... Projects ends up at cost at 1000.00 with a bunch of so-so compatible module.

This dating script is a go out of the box. YOU can install/configure it yourself.

I will be seting up a new one for a private members club !

BTW, I have no interest in you taking it or not ( no refferal and I am not the owner ... lol ).
