At the risk of sounding very small indeed I'm wondering if anyone can tell me or send me a link to where these PR numbers come from? I can make a guess at what the "PR" means but how do you give it a number between 1 and 4?

PR is PageRank and that number is between 1 to 10
its given by Google. for example http://www.yahoo.com/ has a PR9 its not the Yahoo domain.. its only that page has a PR9.

Google started with known "Good" Trusted sites like Yahoo and created a system of Ranking the importants of Sites.

basically if you have a car site
and you are listed with yahoo at

http://dir.yahoo.com/Business_and_Ec...ers__Services/

that page has a PR5.


So now google knows you are somewhat important since an important page linked to you.

and if you get more important pages like that yahoo page to link to your page you will eventually get a good PR too.. and people you will link to would become important as well.


In the beginning this was as simple as that, but today its slightly more complex.. its important that the category of the site linking to you would be smiler or closely related to the category of your site.


so if you have a PR7 car site.. its not going to work to link it to a sex site.


but if you have a PR4 TGP that is General sex and you link it to an Anal site you will be fine.

the PR number for a site can be found using a few different ways.. one of them is the Google toolbar and its the main way

the other ways .. are sites on the Internet that access the google servers for the toolbar and get the PR from it.
their are many sites.. and i have no interest to recommend one over the other.. so i wouldn't just search for Pagerank and you will find a few of them

Aha, thanks for the full explanation, MarkMan, much appreciated! I'd guessed that PR must be page rank but i didn't wanna look stoopid if it wasn't

I'm starting to re-visit the traffic for our sites at the moment, I've been using alexa.com which splits a site up into rank and reach. I'm definitely interested in finding out if I am a number between 1 and 10 so I'm gonna download the google toolbar as soon as i get back to my own PC.

I don't know the correct terminology but I think there is "traffic", "genre specific traffic" and "quality traffic" - it sounds like the google toolbar recognises the genre which is very cool. I hear JoesTraffic, PR doesn't mean that people with credit cards are spending money at your site or affiliate progs.

Cool tool. So whats a good PR to have, whats the highest google will give to a porn site? thehun.net has 5 - is 4 all the rest of us can hope for?

I read that the highest that porn sites can get is pr 7, which i believe is what playboy.com has. But I may be wrong.

PageRank tools list Playboy.com as a 9, however the toolbar lists it as a 7.

i had a pr3 site, and i got like 100-200 people a month from google...

google is one of our biggest referrers but we're only rated PR3, i think the ranking is down to how important they think you are as opposed to how much traffic they send you.
