WTF is going on here?

I asked one of my hosts for a dedicated IP.. They asked me what I wanted it for.. I said for SEO purposes.. They said:

"It would not be allowed per the ICANN guide lines to give out IPs for this purpus."

What the hell does that mean?

I contacted another of my hosts, and they said there's a shortage of IPs right now, they'll get back to me later.. They too asked why I want my own IP. I told them the same thing: SEO purposes. They never got back to me.

The third host I contacted asked for $50/year per IP, which is double what I expected to pay..

Has anyone else had similar problems? I honestly had no idea it was so difficult to get your own IP.

usually on shared servers they have 10+ websites to one IP.. perhaps go dedicated and you will get a bank of them

Actually, with these virtual hosts, it's more like 300+ per IP, which really sucks...

so yeah, I should probably get a dedicated box. I was lookin' at gotwebhost.com and they seem to have some good deals.

Hmm, i never had any problems with that, i always request a ip and within a hour a new ip is available.

A good host should give you at least 1 dedicated IP. Any domain with unique content is elegable for it's own IP. so what they're telling you is BS. The more domains they host, the more IPs they get "provisioned".

If you want a dedicated IP get a dedicated box - I get 5 dedicated IPs included with mine and can easily add more for a small fee
