I'm sure this questions been asked a gazillion times, but could someone please post the steps neccessary to make an image one solid single color so it looks like a background image used in banner headers?

I am not sure what you are asking. Are you wanting to make an image in one color but different shades of that color like blue tints. Or do you want to cut out something in an image and create a solid background color for it? -
Yes thats exactly what I was looking for, tints. I want to tint an image.Comment

METHOD ONE:
- From the "Image" menu select Adjust>Hue Saturation.
- Check "Colorize"
- Set saturation somewhere between 40 and 80.
- Adjust the Hue slider to find the color you're looking for.
METHOD TWO:
- Create a new layer above the rest of your design/document
- Fill it with the color you wish to tint (Edit>Fill)
- Set the layer's BLENDING MODE (See the Layers pallete, it's Normal by Default) to either HUE or COLOR
