    Hosting help (fuck)

    Hello folks, fucks whatever,

    new member of GFY here.

Got a little question about hosting. I had a site hosted with hostonce.com - I knew it was too good to be true.

I finally managed to scrape some traffic my way, and on the first day that I was getting visitors (approx 4000) they killed my account because it 'violated their High User agreement'. That would be fair enough if I was getting hundreds of thousands of hits, but 4000?? Anyway they're giving me a full refund so I aint got anything bad to say about them, in fact I recommend them for anyone who's hosting a site who doesnt expect high traffic.

oops, sorry lost the plot there for a minute. Basically I've checked out a few adult hosts, much more expensive than hostonce, but I guess thats to be expected if I'm going to get quite a lot of traffic (4000 is lots for me). I've found this one XXXTreme Hosting and the only one I could afford is the cheapest virtual hosting package. the 100 MBs should be fine, if not I can always buy some more but I'm worried about the bandwidth. I dont know much about this. Is 25 GB a month alot? Could someone give me a rough example of how many visitors this would be? I know it depends on what they download and stuff but just a rough estimate will be perfect.

If anyone has any other better hosts could you please post em here as well? That would help loads. The cheaper the better I'm afraid cos I'm a little poor irish boy way out of his financial depth, and I'm a bloody student.

    Cheers in advance

25GB is really not much if you're doing any substantial amount of traffic. It's also hard to quantify how many visitors that would be because it all depends on what kind of content you have on your sites. If they're downloading movies, 25GB wouldn't really amount to many visitors, but if they're download small size pics, you could manage a lot more visitors for just the 25GB. What kind of content are people downloading off your site?

          Dude,

I just checked out XXXTreme hosting, and you could do a lot better. They're charging more than $2 per gig of transfer. You could easily find a deal for $.75 per gig if you go with cogent bandwidth. Shop around.

My content will be all movies, above 1MB. ooo... I see what you mean, that would only be 25000 downloads then wouldnt it. hmmm.. looks like this is going to be harder than I first thought. I cant afford to be forking out $$$ for overage if I'm not getting many conversions, and I cant check out how many conversions I'm getting until I fork out some $$$.

            catch 22 gah!

            cheers for your help all

ok, how about this one: http://www.adulthost.com/hosting/index.html - yet again it seems a bit too good to be true. anyone know anything about them?

Companies that say they offer unlimited bandwidth are lying, period. If you host with a company that offers unlimited bandwidth, chances are that they will delete your site when it receives much traffic. Stay away from such hosting companies!

Unlimited Bandwidth is only for newbies and "My First Homepage" people. If you have any type of decent traffic you already cross the thin line between unlimited and pay per gig. Sure you might be able to rent some space on a perm XMbit pipe with unlimited net, but then you are really forking out the $$$.

You have to really think of it this way when it comes to hosts. If a host offers say 30Gb initial transfer at $2.50/Gb thereafter, then you have to think... Now say that you are getting $40/su for your traffic to sponsors. That means that you need to get atleast 1 signups in 16Gb to pay for that bit of excess bandwidth. If you have 1Mb files and 10 per page, then that's a 1:1638 ratio that you need to better to start covering costs.

You really have to give money to make money these days.

Cheers for your help. I'm sure that is really good advice, but the mathematics totally lost me. I think I'm more confused now than I was when I started.

I thought that the whole unlimited bandwidth was a bit too good to be true so I'll stay away from that. Guess I'm just going to have to take a gamble and hope that in my first month of hosting I make enough to cover the cost

Student Loans dont stretch too far these days

cheers for all your help folks

Alrite, came across this one now: www.webcheaphost.com
Seems very cheap - I was looking at the $45 plan. More than enough HD space and I'm guessing the bandwidth would be plenty. Thing is though, if I go over that bandwidth and have to fork out loads of cash to pay for the overage, and no-one signs up to my sponsors then I'll be ... whats the right word for this.... ah yes - Fucked

I'm guessing this is the risk I have to take

Any more advice on that host, or even the host that you are using to host your sites would be greatly appreciated

                        Cheers

well I'm not the best example of spending money to make money... I run a heap of non-porn sites averaging around 150Gb/m 5x my "free" limit. I get nothing out of it (at the moment), but they are more hobbies than anything else. But also on the side I have two adult sites ready to go live once I have my members sections fleshed out abit more.

You should be able to find some host out there that could give you a good deal... just roughly work out from any stats that you have now: ((Current Bandwidth - Free Bandwidth Limit) * Overuse rate) / Sponsor's rate per signup - now you have how many signups you need to make to cover your costs. From there it's all down to your strategy on getting the traffic to make the signups.

if you are gonna post movies and expect to get alot of traffic i would go with datahosters.com. they have a $100.00 special going with 300 gig transfer a month. thats about as good as it will get. ive heard many good things about them, but i just started with them so i cant tell you much yet.
quiet - first you get the money. then you get the power. then you get the shit talking on gfy.
