Becuase I want to use the script on one or possibly two of my amateur sites e.g. www.readerswivesonline.com

If you want to do something similar, you can check out some off-the-shelf software like
K-Rate
MiPhoto
or jbPhotoRate

Or you can contact a programmer and have them write one for you.
