Register both .com and .net domain???

I have a question about domain names.

What are the advantages/disadvantages of registering both the .com and .net (and even .co.uk) for your chosen domain?

The obvious one to me is that if you got both then a surfer would always hit your site no matter what extension they type in. Which in turn prevents someone else from getting your potential traffic. Anyone agree/disagree? Is this such a big issue?

Thanks for that Obviously it will be more important for different types of sites etc and the way traffic comes to the sites.

      Any more opinions out there?
