Need help on password protected directories

Problem:
If a visitor clicks on my " member login " link, the server requests the username and password, which of course if fine if it is a real member with a valid pw.
If, however, this link was pulled up accidentially, then the server keeps asking for the login and it is impossible for a visitor to just close to login prompt and return to the previous page unless he shuts down the current browser.

What can be done to correct this problem ? Any ideas ?

I think you should hire programmer to do that.
