    Hosting.. money wise.

I have a dedicated reseller. And I was thinking of offering hosting to webmasters. But, is there really even a need for more hosts. And are my prices competitive..

I offer Unmetered space and bandwidthm Unlimited MySQL DBs, Unlimited Email, Unlimited FTP Accounts, Unlimited Mailling Lists, and cPanel X & Fantastico for 15 dollars a month or 150 yearly. I was wondering if my pricing was competitive, and if people would actually be willing to pay.

I have no problem offering the hosting, I would just like to know if I would get anything out of it.

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Your service would be dead in a few days.. It doesn't take a lot of gallery submitters to kill you on bandwidth charges..

I work with webmasters on a one-on-one basis to determine what kind of solutions would work for them. Taking into consideration the type of sites that they will be producing, the amount of content, and their budget, among other things, I've become quite successful in doing this.

Don't listen to these other guys. They're just mad because they bought some $3.00/month hosting and their sitse about their grandmothers getting it rough didn't make 'em as much as they thought it would ;)

If you're interested, feel free to shoot me an email - [email protected]

                As far as unlimited bandwidth..
I said unmetered. It allows me to yank people's accounts if the usage gets too intense, without giving them a quota. I havent had to yet, but I thought about it.
                As far as connection speed,
5mbps isn't even an OC line. I have an OC-1, which is 51.84 Mbps.
Granted this is far from the fastest connection available (OC-768 at 40 Gbps) but it's alot faster then alot of hosting companies provide.
And no, it isnt a generic reseller. Its a custom built out of house rackmount, running Slackware 10, with a networked raid array at 2TBs, and an OC-1 backbone.

Im not a noob you know. I have been doing this for quite a while. Quite succesfully. I just now thought about advertising at this end of the buisness.

And I never even said I would, just wanted to wonder If you guys thought it was worth it.

Unless you want to go into this fulltime, just offer the hosting to some friends. It isnt worth the headache.

For that price, I'd not offer any email services as it will attract spammer attnetion - your IPs will soon be blacklisted and a number of complaints to a DC will end up in your box being yanked.

One thing to thing VERY seriously about is security - you can be a pro server admin but know shite about security. Pathcing your box to high heaven will only leave you secure against outside attacks, but wide open to people who know what they're doing if they're hosted on a box (even if they don't have SSH access)

If you truly can do unlimited bandwidth (which I have serious reservations about), I say go for it - just protect against spammers and hackers and why the heck not?

(consider figuring out the email as test #1)

Again, Unmetered. Its a technicality of sorts, and tricks alot of people. But it works. I dont give them a quota, but if need be, I can cap it for the day. Its all in the terms of service. The Email thing, is something I have overlooked. Currently I offer hosting to people who.. probably wouldnt know how to go about abusing mail but, Ill have to revise that.
Allthough I dont do this as a fulltime thing (I work at a PC repair place o_O) I have been getting a rather steady income from it. Not high, about 200 bucks a month with around 50 hostees at any given time. But, It works for me.

And as far as security, I know. Its a serious concern of mine. But I know quite a bit about security and I have people that work for me that know even more. Im fairly sure we are pretty secure. When I move the server over to Gentoo later this month (Which I have been avoiding because of the days compile) I plan to chroot jail everything and stuff like that. I'm not too incredibly worried.

I would also be concerned about offering unlimited databases.

but, If you really have an excellent bandwith capability, and you make the right numbers, you can make it. Just know that webmasters depend on their sites and you will have no life, other thatn that, go for it! How much per gig?

Allright, I did pretty much everything I could to revise the plans and TOS properly, and boosted security. So I'm going to open for hosting.
