ONLY SERVER OWNERS READ no one else is needed

I have a kind of important question and was hoping maybe someone could help me find an answer. Around 6:30 am yesterday the server where one of my domains was hosted started recieving massive inbound email requests we are talking like 800 messages per second constantly which were all being denied but it brougth the server load upto around the 131 point or so they said when i was finally notified around 3 i couldnt do anything until 5:30 when i got home and changed my dns servers to my registrar's to stop the traffic from going to the box. Now my question is that the guy owning the box says that he incured a 400 dollar bill in just yesterdays activities plus all the greif and hastle. what do you guys have to say / think of it? its not like i brought on the mail or that i had anyway to find out myself i dont have direct access to the box i just have a control panel no logs or ssh access and i really had no way to stop the traffic because even changing the dns takes a while on depending on where they are requesting the ip from on the net. Any input is greatly appreciated thanks.

he basiclly gave me an ultimatum saying i pay the 400 or give him my domain, fuck giving the domain and i really dont feel i should have to pay nor should he have to it was basiclly a denial of service attack it wasnt like i asked people to try to take out the server by spamming

That's complete B.S.

If the server was flooded he could have easily put up a firewall to block access on port 25 so all incoming mail would not reach the server. Real email users would receive a bounce back message because their mail couldnt be delivered and would resend later.

The attacker would stop then you can unblock the port.

Even with 800 emails coming through, if they werent being received thats not a lot of bandwidth, and the majority of hosts dont even charge you for incoming packets.

So the only thing that would make this make any kind of sense is if he incurred $400 of server administration charges to setup a firewall or look into this issue, which is also absurd, since its like 10-30 minutes of work maximum, and any decent managed hosting would take care of this for you free of charge.

that is BS. what was the $400 bill for? sounds like he is a reseller and he is being charged by the server owner for his overage in bandwidth (which is supposedly brought on by that mail bomb).

....and a firewall can be set up in minutes.

if this were the case then they should have turned off the "catch all" so they got rejected.

they were just to random [email protected] as far as i know but 800 per second for almost 12 hours i could see it using a bit of bandwidth but at one point it crashed the server because the loads were too high. I dunno seems like 400 dollars is quite a shitload when he could have done something to stop ot early in the game i can see how he couldnt stop the mailserver due to others on the box but he had access to the dns he could have changed the mx couldnt have?

Looks like someone just wanted to realy through that server really, really bad. Oh well.

as far as I understand, its not your fault, nor is it your end of the bargain, he's the fucking host. he has to deal with that shit. If anything I'd be inquiring about a discount on his services for the downtime and confusion.

Sounds like somebody needs to learn a little bit more about server management. Tell em to 'Go Fuck Yourself', then find a better host. I cant see charging someone for something like that, I get spammers loading a number of my domains all the time but they just get rejected and move on. Not to sound like I'm trying to sell anything but if you need another host (which it sounds like ya might) get a hold of me on icq 235866993 .

I own several servers and I host a very big network. My machines get atacked almost every day but I don't care much because I have taken the needed measures. Nowadays a dedicated box costs near $100 with 1 TB of bw or $350 for unmetered 10 Mb. There is no way those emails to generate 1 TB of traffic during 5 hours, so this guy is lying you and trying to get your money.

Get another host and you are done.
