How exactly do affiliate programs work?

are you looking to join some or start one?

start one means that you allow your affiliates (people who sign up at your site) to promote your site with their affiliate code. any signups they send they will get credit for the sale. this can either be a recurring % or a one time payment.

join some means that you will be promoting other peoples sites with your affiliate code. any signups you send to them, you will get paid for (hopefully).

Would you recommend any affiliate tracking system that has bulit in fraud prevention and something that would allow me to ad multiple domain forwards ?
