how much traffic can a server handle?

I'm wondering how much traffic per day a server can handle? When I get too much traffic to server it slows up quite a bit. I usually have 100MB RAM free and if I go to download videos it is downloading at reasonable speed of 150+Kilobytes sec. However there is a initial delay just getting to sites when there is traffic load. CPU load doesn't look unusual. I'm probably at about 200K uniques per day when this happens. Anyone know where the problem is?

Sounds like the default maxclients limit is not changed in httpd.conf. Unmanaged server, right?

Yes. It looks like my maximum request per server process is set at 1000.
