how to convert SVHS to web format?

We have some 30 minute and 60 minute production broadcast videos (non-adult public access educational material) in SVHS tape format that we want to convert to web format and put on a website.

We will set up a shopping cart and customers will pay a nominal amount ($2.95?) to download individual files. We don't care about encryption/ DRM/ file sharing. We are charging mostly to cover our bandwidth costs. If people share the files that is OK.

How to convert them from tape? And what format is best to play seemlessly on the multitude of video players such as MS and Real? What is the rule of thumb for the determining the approximate GB size? Costs?

    Any advice is appreciated.

To capture the svhs you can use any composite video catpture board or use a conversion cable into a firewire port or USB 2.0 port. Then do any editing you might need in programs like final cut, avid, premire, etc... Render/export your final video as a uncompressed movie DVNTSC at 29.97fps. Then use sorrenson squeeze to compress the file. Most high-quality web movies are 320x240 at 15fps compressed to 768kbps. The majority of files out there are .WMV

This is a real brief overview..there are so many varibles that effect all areas of capture, editing, and compression.

You can ICQ me if you have any further questions.
SIG TOO BIG! Maximum 120x60 button and no more than 3 text lines of DEFAULT SIZE and COLOR. Unless your sig is for a GFY top banner sponsor, then you may use a 624x80 instead of a 120x60.
