Are Meta Tags still useful? I heard somewhere that search engines are not really focusing on them much anymore and soon they will be pointless, is this true?

as far as I have read about Search Engines (I am new to that area too but quickly learning), you SHOULD put metatags with keywords taken from the content of the page. Then the SE knows that they are relevant to the content and will award you with a higher rank. Same thing with the <title> tag :-) They also like to see the words that appear in the title in context.
Hope it helps :-)Join my Nikcho.com Blog and say what you think!Comment

Dont forget ALT tags on your images and links. They "count" too as content, and your thumbed galleries will show up everywhere

Google puts as much weight on <H1-3> tags as it does meta tags. THey also claim to verify page content against titles, headers and meta tags. It does not hurt ot use them so go for it. Also don't forget commonly mis-spelt versions of your keywords.
