buying traffic??

howdy,
so..what is this "buying traffic" all about that i've read in so many threads?
how does this work exactly....are these sellers just putting my link on their sites and then after surfers click x amount of hits i bought, they remove the links?
who is the target audience for buying traffic? i mean, our site (amvc.com) actually makes and sells vhs and dvd videos.....we're not a membership site, don't make money off of clicks, etc. just an online retail store since '97 (boy how things have changed) given that....should we be buying traffic or is that for other folks with completely different types of sites?

Yep, or they put your link as a gallery spot and when it gets clicked it all gets counted to the amount you bought.

some do exit traffic / popups/ pop behinds for your site as well.

You may try traffic brokers, like www.trafficshop.com for some general cheap adult traffic or try to use PPC SE's if you want to chose your own targetted keywords.

The effectiveness of buying traffic is a difficult thing to measure. I have never made a significant profit directly from the hits. But what I have noticed is that sales go up in general. (if you look at your monthly sales instead of sales from the hits you just purchased)

I guess it is all about exposure. . if you have a good domain name and site that is memerable, buy traffic to get your brand name pounded into the surfers heads. I don't think it is very possible to just buy hits and turn a quick profit directly from the clicks. If it was, wouldn't the people selling the hits just keep those joins for themseleves?

I think when you buy hits (especially for a paysite) you need to look at it as an investment that will pay out in months to come. You need to organize a campaign and follow through with it (even if preliminary numbers suck) . . just to get the exposure and to get surfers familiar with your site. .

GoogleAdwords... It isn't instant, but you definately get what you pay for. Just a thought.
