What thumbnail size do you prefer ?

I'm planning a complete new design for my sites' thumbnail galleries, and at the same time I'd like to settle for a common size of the thumbs (easier recycling!)

What size do you prefer? 100 x 67 pixels? Are there any "industrial" standards?

Any input is welcome!

all my thumbs are 100x100, which leads to a little disortion, but means i never have to worry about layout

for me i use from 80 to 120 pixels height.. and the width will be resized depenging on the height

I like 'em to just fit the end of my thumbs, when they get a little longer I clip 'em.

Then there's this to consider:
To small thumbnails => the surfer can't really see what the full-size pics are like => the surfer therefore clicks thru to see what the picture is like => BW is eaten => the thumbnail failed to fullfill its major task.

right now most of my galleries are 120 (used to be 80.. just added 40 pixels (on height)

A thumbnail should not be to small or too large and should be a proportional fraction of the actual image size.
Perspectively distorted images look sloppy and unprofessional. They will keep you from getting listed on many TGPs and will drive away your surfers.
Images in the 130x85 range seem to be about right. Images smaller than 100 pixels become difficult to see and larger ones are overwhelming.
Thumbnails on a page should all be the same size unless they are part of a purposely created asymetrical spatial pattern.

I used 110 for my latest galleries... The real design/layout issue is how to juxtapose standing pics and lying pics !!!

I use a program that i tell to force 120 pixel height on the thumbs. Makes the gallery look good and avoids distortion.

I'd like to see a thumbnailer that resizes the width OR height (keeping the poportions) to a fixed value depending on which direction is the longer.

when I'm posting galleries at freehosts I prefer thumbs at heigt 130. But when I'm making galleries hosted at my own domain I resize the thumbs to heigt 110 to save bandwith, because thumbs are real bandwith busters.

Have you ever checked out Simple Thumbs?

I have tried a few others but this is the one that I found to treat me the best. Lots of features like controling size and compression, text overlay, borders, tables, edit your templates to include whatever you want, link the thumbs to html pages or straight to the larger pics, rename them etc. etc. Passed this on to a couple of others so far and they love it to.

in the babe site scene, there are auto-thumbs that are all 66x100. the auto-thumbs are hotlinkable thumbs that show off the picture of the day of the site they link to. here's some examples on my webmasters page:

They are that size 66x100 due to photoshops large thumbnail size. Thats as big as they go at least in 5.5.

Gemini, is that why? i didn't know that! i think whoever first did an auto-thumb, or whoever made it popular, chose that size first and then it stayed that way ever since. ...because different sized thumbs are ugly!
