A few of the thumbs are poor quality

The deal is, tgp's get a thousand or more submissions every
day so they just choose the best to list.

i'm using 130x80 and 80x130 images... what are the preffered thumbnail sizes?

Don't like the arrangement of thumbs - it is a bit harder, but the gallery will look much better if you don't mix portrait and landscape oriented thumbs. There's too much wasted space there.

Not bad. Just try to increase the image-size a bit (by using a tool like Jasc Image Robot or something) and place a recip of thehun on your gallery.
