join referrals

I'm looking for a way of tracking where people who join are coming from. Most billing companies don't really do much to show this from what I see. How can this sort of tracking be done?

I've noticed lots of bigger companies require people to put in email address and name before they get to actually billing company join page. Would this be a way of tracking??

I'm thinking it must be possible to catch referral pages back so many pages or so. For instance if site has four tour pages before join page, a referral back 5pages from join page would probably find out where they came from. Anyone know any counters that do something like this?

Do you want to know which page they joined from, or where they originally entered your site? If it's the latter, you can check for a cookie on every page load; if it's not set, then write the referring URL to it. Then you can read it from within your members area. I do this on both of my paysites.
