google webmaster tools shows back links, but google SE dont

If you do the little trick in googles search engine
link:yourdomain.com or www.whatever.com
youre supposed to be able and get the results for the websites which are linking to your own website.

thing is i have several back links and the google trick thing never displays them
but google webmaster tools tells me i have many..

any idea?
