wordpress issue - cannot rename categories / slug name already in use

I was renaming several categories and the first few went fine, but then 3 categories would not change. I would rename them and click save, but then when I went back to the categories page, the categories I had changed still showed as the old names. Finally I deleted them and made new ones, but it forced the slug names to be "slugname-2" it will not let me name the slugs the old slug names - it is saying the slug names are still in use even though I deleted the old categories! How can I fix this?

    Hi Relyx,

If you have access to the db you could change them in there, or if you wanted I could take a look for you

    Kind Regards

    Rob

i have access to everything but i dont know where to look what file is it in? and do i need a specific program to open the file?

also, i emptied the trash from the comments tab, is that what you meant? i cant find a trash on the categories tab or anywhere else... after emptying the trash from comments tab it still will not let me change the slug to slugname its staying slugname-2

There is NOT a trash can, which holds deleted categories.

Im thinking somehow the entries got stuck in the databse, so when you try to make a new one it detects them in the database and tells you NO!! lol...

so like the other robber said, get in to your database, if you have cPanel login, and go to phpmyadmin select the table which belongs to your wordpress blog, and look around from there.

BE CAREFUL IN THERE YOU CAN FUCK STUFF UP

robber helped me, basically it looks like when i delete categories OR TAGS, it DOES NOT DELETE THEM!! it just hides them. so I deleted the categories and tags I have previously deleted and it got rid of the conflict so I could rename my new categories' slugs as desired. I wonder if this is some stupid setting? I don't like it; when I say DELETE I mean MAKE IT GO AWAY FOREVER!
