Virus on computer - Windows 7

I just got an attack from Windows 7 Virus protection and totally took over my computer. Kept trying to run a virus check and trojans and all kinds of shit would pop up. I was unable to turn it off so it was obviously a "rogue" anti-spyware program.

Crazy shit is that I tried to get online and download a computer virus scan program i've used in the past and it would not let me get on any page except to purchase windows 7 2011 anti-virus software.

Crazy shit.

So anyway, I had to recover my operating system to an earlier date and no problems yet except my mmcafee real time scanning is disabled and will not turn back on.

I've researched a bit and other with win 7 has had this attack and comments on what I read was mcafee is no good.

Norton not any better (btw... why does norton keep trying to install itself on my computer from the day I bought it last year?) I don't want fucking Norton and can't seem to get it to go away.

My question:

What is the current cream of the crop anti-virus and spyware protection now adays?

Also... anyone familiar with this attack recommend a scan of hard drive in case anything is left on my computer?

I use Microsoft Security Essentials and haven't had any issues.

yeah ... had that prob once after downloading Photoshop CS3 and pretty much knowing what I was getting into, I went ahead to play with fire.

get Microsoft Security Essentials.. its free and works good. I've had several AV progs but this one is great for the price.

However,
your problem is worse.

Either
a: Try Belarc Security Adviser to find the rogue (super-hidden) file in your Windows directory. Usually named and disguised as a windows file and delete it. Reboot and scan with AV software to kill anything else.

or

b. Boot into safe mode and scan the computer with MSE or some other AV software. But of course dont buy the shit the virus is trying to sell you unless you want to give hacks your credit card to play with. Then once you know the virus name, google it for a fix or see the MSE fix recommendation. You probably need to go into terminal mode and find the super-hidden files the virus put on your computer. Log in as admin or view admin files via BelArc Security Advisor. Thats actually how I found the main hidden virus file in my Windows/System directory. This is tricky shit, but fixable.

McAfee + Norton = Fail.

I've used MS Security Essentials, I used AVG for years. Most recently, I've used Avast and Kaspersky.

The best results I've gotten are from Panda Cloud Anti-Virus. It doesn't slow down my machine, and false-positives are almost non-existant.

With Avast - which I used for about a year - I had it test a "trainer" program for a game I play - a trainer which is a known false positive. Avast insisted on deleting every .txt, .doc. .htm, and .html on my computer.

I despise programs which insist on putting massive buttons inh my sidebar (Kaspersky, Avast), and programs that have a real hard time with false positives (MS-SE, Avast, AVG). As well, programs like AVG, Norton, and McAfee (Norton & McAfee were fine AV's about ten years ago) take WAY too many resources.

Buy Kaspersky (in spite of the massive sidebar button...) or check out Panda.

I used Avast for quite awhile, but its turning into a resource hog. Massive button in the Windows Sidebar (which I use for currency exchange, international time, and local weather), constant FUCKING BUY AN UPGRADE ALREADY!!! reminders, and a horrendous false-positive record.

Avast is going the way of AVG - useless. If you actually buy the Avast security suite, its even worse. Might as well buy Norton. Or McAfee. Garbage built to make you pay for shit you don't actually need.

Microsoft will, I'm sure, be refining their product (I get too many false positive with it right now), Kaspersky is amazing (but I cannot tolerate the Sidebar intusion). I've settled on Panda Cloud.

Tiny footprint, few false positives. I almost can't tell Panda is running - but it doesn't miss a thing. Its updated in real time 24 hours a day. No downloads, no (or very, very few) updates. Your machine will not slow down when it scans. A stunning product that will only get better.

I just got nailed a few hours ago with some piece of shit that hijacked my computer called Essential Cleaner, another version of that fake virus scanner bullshit where they try to force you into buying a useless piece of software to remove the shit meanwhile stealing your credit card info - shit is getting worse and how many of these assholes ever get caught and sent to jail, probably none - it wouldn't let me run any programs, no msconfig or tskmgr and even blocked me from visiting some well known forums that help getting rid of malware.

rebooted in safe mode and got to bleepingcomputer.com where there was a guide just created for removing this one - which is a very new piece of shit so i expect many will be getting it.

Malwarebytes is great and I've run Microsoft's Malicious Software Removal Tool and now going to install Microsoft Security Essentials.

windows 7 requires action by the user for these things to install. usually it is a pop up warning box and people click okay. just close the box with the corner x and it all goes away.

You can also do a forced install of Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware by loading it to a disc or other portable drive from another box and then install and run it in safe mode.

Run the program then reboot normally, update both Malwarebytes anad MSE and run full scans with both but not at the same time of course!

Should do the trick.

I use Microsoft Security Essentials, Malwarebytes, Spybot and CCleaner with Zone Alarm Free Firewall. I also update DAILY and run several quick scans randomly throughout the day. You also might want to turn on User Account Control after you get all this other stuff done as it can keep malware from executing without your permission.
