I always do those 2 right away. Depending on the site I use a bunch of others.

- W3 Total cache
- Platinum SEO Pack

And i will add again AddThis Social Bookmarking Widget to try and see how users share and does they share
But, i hate it because it pulls stuff from their CDN so more DNS requsts..

Few plugins is OK.
Or, keep it disabled until you need it eg for backuping if you don't have access to CP

Shut off comments is the dumbest thing you can do. Search engines love sites with very active commenting visitors!

In five plus years of running adult blogs I've gotten maybe 15-20 genuine comments. I will be happy to send you my thousands of comment spam a month, though, since you benefit from it.

Maybe your post didn't really entice people to leave comments? I'm no expert but 5 years with 20 genuine comments is kinda bad.

You may be right, but it's certainly debatable

I turned them off bc I think they distract from the call to action.

And are those who comment more or less likely to make a purchase? I think less likely.

I had this up on the q+a page for awhile, but finally just turned them off.

Why has my comment not been posted?
Probably because it was either poorly written, used an excessive amount of slang, or was simply in bad taste. If I feel that a comment does not add to the experience of viewing any particular page, it will not be accepted. Period. I am aware of the perception that posting comments and giving readers an opportunity to freely express their opinions is a vital component to the blogosphere, but I really don?t care. With that being said, well written and tasteful comments are more than welcome. Also note that more grammatical leeway will be given to a comment if it?s clear that English is not the first language of the writer. Particularly to those who are French and female.

When 90% of the comments are off-topic its time to make them go "bye-bye".

I use Akismet (seems to come with every install...), the sitemap plugin, and a database backup plugin (Even though I don't need it.) Beyond that, I use a few plugins if I want to "fancy" things up.

I don't use SEO plugins anymore - I optimize my categories, posts, and pages as I write them.

Are you running splogs or blogs?

Obv a splog would get no interaction with its audience, where as a proper blog would.

With comments enabled, people have three options after they finish reading a post, looking at pictures, or watching a clip.

1. Go Elsewhere (either somewhere else on the site or to a different site)
2. Make A Purchase
3. Leave A Comment

If comments are disabled, they only have two options.

Also, the act of leaving a comment gives people the illusion that they've accomplished something, making them even less likely to make a purchase.

Unless you're trying to establish an online community of sorts, which is a difficult thing to do when revolved around a product largely consumed in solitude, the typical commenter is a essentially a virtual loiterer.
