Is there a plug-in (or any other way) to have a thumbnail picture on a post open up to the full sized pic on a html or php page? (other than manually making the page then hotlinking to it)? Any automatic way to do it?

When you insert the image, you can choose Post Url, which links to an attachment page. I believe that's what you want?

Wordpress gallery does this. It is built in.

look into customizing your template files image.php gallery.php and attachment.php

Just the image on .html or .php? That won't really help for what you're trying to accomplish, i think i know what you're aiming for. You'll also need the browser title and h1 title on page at least, not to mention a few lines of text. Don't know of any plugin that does that, it can be done though with a custom solution.
