Thanks! I have been working a little bit on a older iMac but mostly on Win. Now, my laptop is sooooo slow. Looking forward to get some speed I actually counted the startup on a browser today, right after I turned the machine on and while antivirus and whatever was still starting... It too 81 seconds to get on the net

I did a test on a new i7 with 4GB ram... Opened up 3-4 programs (don't remember witch) and then started opening all the office progs. All of them started within 2 sec. Impressing! So I am very confident that I will be able to run all my regular programs and then some, without problems.

Now, to be fair with my old Asus, when I boot into Linux it is very fast and nice so I will keep it as a spare

I have said here many times that I wouldn't buy any more Apple hardware.

I will however be buying a new Macbook Pro in the next few weeks.

                        Spend you some brain.

Got it!! And I love it! So quick and nice to use. No more waiting 30-70 seconds for big programs to open, it is all done in 1-5 sec. Sweet!

Just a quick question: how can I run (or can I) Nifty Stats on a Mac without installing Windows?

It sounds like you went with a Mac because of performance reasons, which is very sad because Win PC's and Laptops that are equal priced smoke a Mac.

As a multiple pc and mac owner, I'll never spend the money again on a Mac. But I would for my wife... it's strong, easy to use but hard enough she can't mess much up, perfect for computer newbies.

As a multiple pc and mac owner, I'll never spend the money again on a Mac. But I would for my wife... it's strong, easy to use but hard enough she can't mess much up, perfect for computer newbies.
Not only this. I wanted to try Mac as I have always been on Windows and partial Linux. I also love the look of the Mac Yes, I was looking at PC laptops with the same specs. and I could have saved maybe $300 going for PC. I 100% agree on the newbie part. Mac (and Ubuntu, maybe?) would be the best for someone all new to computers. But no regrets here, I love my new machine

Honestly though, after 10.0 came out, it has been perfect... and once they learn how to get / install the basics of software and games and see how much they have to go through, they light up with joy.

I'm on Windows 7 - and it rocks! It's been close to 3 years now, and while I have made some upgrades to the hardware, lost a power supply, and had a stick of ram pop which I then upgraded from 4 to 8 gigs of ram.... and right now, my bios battery is 100% dead - overall though, Win7 wise - without question, the best OS windows has ever made.

I've had to rebuild Mac's because they slowed to a crawl... it depends on how they are used.

If the machine is a work horse, video machine or whatever. Both will take a beating, both will need parts replaced faster, and overtime both will slow to a crawl, making a rebuild a must to get the performance back.

As equal as they may be in that area, when it comes time to rebuild those two machines, the Win Pc will cost half the amount of money and get even faster parts, while the Mac will get the same parts or slightly upgraded parts, for twice the cost.

It's just that on a Mac, that same hardware is 2x more expensive.

For instance, Here's my main workstation specs (chassis only, not including monitors, etc.. just whatever comes with a Mac pro + increased specs on Mac Pro to match what I have):

                                                                                            Processor - 2x Intel Xeon E5620 Westmere 2.4GHz
                                                                                            Motherboard - Asus Z8NA-D6C

Mainboard: Pretty sure this is proprietary

                                                                                            Mouse - Magic Mouse

This is pretty much a side by side comparison to the "hefty" Mac Pro 8 core and my main workstation...
2 Main differences are the Main SSD drive and the video card.
Since the Mac Store is showing 1,250 for the 512GB SSD we'll divide that by 4 to get a better comparison: $313 for 128GB SSD. Subtract $937 from the above Mac Pro Total

Video card: I'm using a lower end video card than what comes with the mac pro so we'll first deduct the $95 from my PC total, then add $155 for the ATI Radeon HD 5770. Mac charges $250 for the same ATI Radeon HD 5770 card, just fyi.

Also note: The Mac Pro motherboard is a custom design, manufactured by Hai Hon Electronics Co. (FoxConn), also a manufacturer of PC motherboards. I couldn't find a comparable FoxConn board with the same specs as the Mac Pro for PCs however.

                                                                                            Total PC cost: $2350
Total Cost for Mac* : $4262
*with same specs and only proprietary hardware component being the motherboard... and case if you want to get down to the bitty gritty

The price difference becomes even more grotesque when you start adding things like monitors, software, etc. But this comparison is for chassis hardware specs only, in which Apple only uses a proprietary motherboard (and case if you want complete comparison), the rest are grossly inflated pieces of hardware found in PCs.. well, server/workstation class PC's, not your everyday desktop.

This is pretty much why I use my "PC hardware" and run Mac OS X OS on it as opposed to paying nearly double for a "real Mac Pro" with just about the same hardware I bought for my PC.
