Network Solutions Pricing $$$$

Is anyone still using Network Solutions for registering domain names? It cost $34.99 for a new domain reg fee. That was the same price I paid over 10 years ago from them.

I have 1 domain still with them that I am going to transfer ASAP. The discount sucks from them even for a 10 year reg. at around $18 a year.

I believe they are the same people who own NameSecure.com as well.

Recently the 1 year NameSecure.com registration price doubled, jumping from around $7.95 all the way up to $14.95, out of nowhere!

register.com has to be the worst though. they charge 38 bucks plus if you renew it even 1 hour after expiry, they will charge you a 25 dollar 'fee' to renew it. fucking theives.

I agree - register.com is the worst. NetSol has always charged a lot too though.

NetSol was the first and only registrar for so long that a lot of customers don't know how or want the inconvenience of moving. I doubt they are getting many new clients at that pricing, but why change once you have a big marketshare. Its easier for them to buyout another registrar to be competitive there instead of lowering prices for old clients.

34.99? When I started I'm pretty sure they used to charge $70 and I've heard some mention that they once charged $100 before that. If you have some real gems for domains then you'd be wise to care more about reliability, support and customer friendliness over price alone. It doesn't make sense to lose a $50,000 domain over some bullshit policy and the fact that you used that registrar because they were $5 cheaper. OTOH for regular domains which don't make much more than a few hundred a year it would be stupid to pay that much. Especially if you have hundreds or thousands of those domains.

Why would they lower their prices? Back in the day, they were the only registrar available. They registered millions upon millions of domains, many from companies who don't care if it's $30 or $6.

All they do is sit back, collect the renewal fees, while they setup a subsiduary like NameCheap to compete with today's market, after ICANN allowed multiple registrars in.

Network Solutions used to charge $200 per domain, then dropped to $100. They used to be a monopoly.

you can call them up and get hookup rates... probably only works if you have many domains with them though...

Well the 1 domain I still have with them is my favorite domain that is worth a lot to me (Handball related domain), not worth a lot of $$$. But I am not sure if saving $100 to register for 10 years is worth transferring to Moniker. Not sure what complications can happen....

People still use network solutions for valuable domains, freeones.com is registered there for example.

For really valuable, developed brand domains, MarkMonitor is worth looking at, but presumably costs a mint. They are the only registrar I'm aware of that offers VeriSign Registry-Lock.

With that said, check out Fabulous - their prices aren't the best, but their support and security is excellent. While their pricing is geared towards people with many domains, contact them to see what they can do, especially if seeking to renew for many years in advance...

Which I would strongly recommend for valuable / important domains, since it better ensures it won't accidentally expire / more easily recovered if somehow is later stolen, and also to lock-in a low price.

.COM prices have been increasingly roughly 7% per year, and that could rapidly increase further if VeriSign (or whoever the .COM registry operator is in the future; VeriSign's contract ends around 2012) gets the rate caps taken off - as of now, ICANN limits price increases, but there's no assurance they will do so in the near future, as in after 2012. Be prepared - if the domain is that important, and you can afford to renew for the max time, in my view, it's best to do it now.

As for Network Solutions these days - it's not the same company anymore - from what I recall, an investment group owns them; they have no special connections to VeriSign.

Paying $35 or so per year is foolish, and even more so considering the number of domains Network Solutions has reportedly lost due to hacking and glitches.

There are numerous better choices, such as Fabulous. For a complete ICANN accredited list see http://www.internic.net/

thats exactly what i paid for my stupidity. tried to transfer domain and they did everything to postpone it, until i was stupid to let my domain expire for one day.

i have few domains on netsol which i bought via namejet with very old reg dates but i'd never reg a new domain there, with the time i transfer them all to moniker.

register.com is a completely different story because they don't want to give you the auth code to transfer out with various bullshit excuses like security reasons etc.

when you want to transfer out on register.com, they try to keep you as a customer with promo code for renewal at $20 and not regular $35
