I Just hit 17k per day using hostgator basic plan

nah 17k isn't, if you're doing xxx,xxx,xxx/day you'd want to think about a small VPS. If you do double that maybe a $60 a month dedicated.

if u are making 100% and ur current host limiting ur usage and if that affects ur biz., by more than 5% then switch to another host by spending not more than 35% on hosting if u are from 1st world country and if ur from 3rd world u can spend as much as 60% on hosting but nor more than 250 bucks for dedicated.., something is better than nothing..

I have a shared biz account there that I use for demos for mainstream clients, I've been running a flash chatroom demo for a client trying to get them to buy the chat and one of my team to install / run it for them on their own website...

Over the past few weeks there have been between 5 - 40 members in the chatroom, and Hostgator has pulled the script 4 times now (last night was #4) the funniest thing is ALL 4 times they pulled it for "server overload" there were diff numbers of users in the chatroom, but NO TIME was that number over 20 users (the nights that have 20 - 40 users there is NO server overload lmao)

and for anyone that cares, each user of the chat sends 1 server request every 3 seconds, but according to Hostgator....

10 users = overload (200 requests per min)
15 users = overload (300 requests per min)
09 users = overload (180 requests per min)
18 users = overload (360 requests per min)

20-40 users = no prob (400 - 800 requests per min)

Hostgator is good for small shit, or running a site demo, (and even they have said to me that they work best for "standard" sites, html, images and text only!)

as others have said "you get what you pay for"

which is why the flash chat was created, little to no server load, everything saved into a single txt file (IF you want it logged) the ONLY thing it does is call a refresh X times per user per min (you set up that variable)

I actually spent quite a few hours with their techs before I launched the demo just to make sure there would be no probs.

As I said though I only use that server for client demos and shit, I have other servers for our big stuff.

I was just pointing out that Hostgator is just random with what IS and what is NOT overload.

Just a few concurrent scripts running will often put on over CPU limit on HostGator basic plan. Upgrade to their business plan, and the limits are a bit better, but still relatively low compared to most VPS services.

As for why a flash app and script would put one over limit at seemingly random times, I suspect part of it may be the overall server load plays a significant role as to when their CPU limiter kicks in for individual accounts. So if server load was already high, that may partly explain it.

Some other things to consider:

Does the script / flash app utilize any ports other than 80? If so, such usage is likely to be more heavily scrutinized / easily spotted.

The size of the flash app itself that's downloaded by the user's browser - doubt that would be an issue unless it's being dynamically created and/or is many megs in size.

There's the statistical possibility that even with only a handful of chat users, their requests are all arriving at nearly the same time. That shouldn't happen often, but it's potentially possible, and with HostGator usage limits, a bunch of concurrent requests to the chat script may set off alarms.

With all that said, it's possible HostGator is running some kind of keyword filter against script / flash app names ... try renaming the flash app and the script to something nonsensical and remove the word "chat" from the chat webpage. Not sure if that would matter, but something to try.

You make some valid points, however I'm NOT looking to fix or keep a chatroom on a shared server with hostgator, I was just pointing out that HG is quite random with what they consider to be high usage....

The chatscript I had running as a demo ONLY makes 1 call per 4 seconds per user, no matter what the user is doing, typing, or idol it's still ONLY 1 request per 4 secs per user in the room.

this is why I find it funny as hell that "larger" nights there is no issues with server load, but smaller nights they literally lockdown the getxml file and start banning ip's

as I've said prior THEIR 2nd level and security techs went through the script PRIOR to me launching the demos to our clients, and they (HG) found NOTHING that would cause a high load UNLESS we were sending THOUSANDS of requests per min.

again, I'm NOT looking to make the script work with HG, nor am I looking for hosting lol.

If this is 17k uniques or visitors per day I'd say there is a very good chance that upgrading to a good dedicated server alone could push you over 20k or 25k uniques a day and pay for itself. If your host is running slow or throttling you that will affect your traffic and enforce a sort of traffic ceiling you will never get over on that host. Just make sure the new host is good and that things load quickly.

I have some TGPS on host gator which do about 40k / day and they have been running fine for a year or two.

Although my tube search engine got shut down because it created 300,000 files and was slowing the server down.

So i am guessing they only shut down your account if it affects the server your on.

If your running a tube site and embedding videos as you say, only 1000 hits could be 10 or 20 GB per day.

So as many people have suggested if you want to grow your site i would suggest get a dedicated box.

The cheapest dedicated boxes i know of, are from FDCservers.net

FDC is also huge, they own a few data centers across the US, if anyone knows of a cheaper and bigger company please let me know ill get a box from them
