    Is Bing using Google?

Google wanted to prove that Bing relies on its own search results and it did it by entering improbable search terms that gave exactly the same results. Everything has been posted on the company blog to which the company founder by Bill Gates responded by denying.

Bing doesn't deny it, they claim it's just a method of collecting data. Their response in verbatim was, "we all learn from our collective customers, and we all should." They harvest search results from Google searches conducted using IE 8 and their Bing toolbar. Google thinks it's cheating and unethical, Bing begs to differ.

As far as I'm concerned, they both likely cross unethical boundaries to pool data. So I don't give a shit about either of their positions.

Google has suspected that Bing was modeling their search results after them. So they setup a trap using obscure search terms and mismatched search results to see if Bing would mimic the results. Which of course they did.

Supposedly Google purposely filled their engine with 1000's of these fake listings for things that are rarely searched and then within a few months magically those listings were on bing too.

For example. Google set it up so that the search term hiybbprqag would point you to a theater in los angeles. If you then searched bing for that term, you got the same result.

        Looks pretty suspicious.

Google engaged in a “honeypot” attack to trick Bing. In simple terms, Google’s “experiment” was rigged to manipulate Bing search results through a type of attack also known as “click fraud.” That’s right, the same type of attack employed by spammers on the web to trick consumers and produce bogus search results.

I think it sucks. We need more search engines with separate results. We don't need 100 more search engines just copying Google's results. Google has too much influence already.

You know... if I was building a search engine today... I'd spider every top search engine out there and pool the results together as well as having my own weighting algorithm. Really, it's the smartest thing to do...
