Remember Hotline Client and Hotline Server?

Hotline was a Client-Server application that enabled incredibly simple access to your machine over the internet. I had it on my Mac about a decade ago and it was excellent. Now I am reduced to Dropbox, which is a far cry from Hotline.

Does anyone know of a similar app that would run on OS X?

Barefootsies- there was no download link and the author's site is out of date because they dropped support for this years ago. I used to use KDX too. Interestingly there was a SIMILAR APP link, which lead to this: http://www.zankasoftware.com/wired/

For a more general replacement, Syncthing is also worth considering if the main thing you want is direct machine-to-machine file sharing without keeping everything in a cloud service. It's cross-platform and doesn't require a central storage account.

But if you specifically remember Hotline, I'd try one of the modern Hotline clients first. It's surprisingly not as dead as you'd expect after all these years.

If what you miss is specifically the Hotline experience rather than just cloud storage, I'd actually look at modern Hotline clients. There are still projects maintaining the protocol, and current clients can do the same basic combination of file browsing/transfers, messaging and chat. (hotlinenavigator.com)
