    Android Tablets

Do any of you have any experience with shopping around for Android tablets?

I'm looking to maybe purchase one with a budget of around $400, and I see that there are a LOT of tablets out there. One of them that caught my eye was the Archos 101. It's shipping with Android 2.1 upgradeable to Android 2.2, but there was something that was a negative aspect of it and I forget what it was.

I dont want none of that junk that doesnt have a capacitative screen and ships with Android 1.5... LOL 1.5 is old school now compared to what 2.2+ can do.

I'm looking for around 10 inch screen, and internal storage I dont really care about because I can buy a memory card for it.

Any tips or do you own one? Let me know!

Yeah, I seen something in passing about some tablets being revealed during this CES, so maybe I will wait. I just wish they'd come out with the damn things already.

I bought the Samsung Galaxy Tab as a xmas gift to myself and i love it. I just modified it last night so now i can make phone calls and surf the net with it using my blackberry voice and data plan on the Rogers network (im in Toronto.)

I'm loving the 7 inch size, the front and back cameras and the android 2.2 OS. I have a bluetooth handsfree headset that connects to it so making phonecalls is quite a joy while i browse the internet or play with apps i downloaded.

I was interested in it but it is above the price range I want to pay for one. Yeah, I know I am sacrificing a feature (calling) but I really dont need it since I'll be able to call using my phone and have my fiance's phone to tether with if I need to while I am on the road, etc.

I can't really justify paying $60 a month for a cap of 5GB data usage when I use twice that on my current phones.

i agree that the samsung tab is on the pricey side. You should look at the NookColor, its been getting rave reviews and people have been able to root it to run on the full android 2.2 platform and its only $250US.

Dont settle for a knock off tablet. Get an iPad.

I prefer open devices, not things that try to limit my technological experience. Thanks though.

The browsing works well but there are a few quirks vs. the Ipad. One thing is that Android 2.2's browser user agent ends up delivering some sites in their mobile version. I guess this is a side effect of Android 2.2 intending to be for mobile phones.

The beautiful thing about Android is that there are numerous browsers to choose from, I installed the Dolphin HD browser that has some unique addons and functionality.

The Galaxy Tab's touch scrolling is very responsive but not quite as polished and sensitive as the iPad's if you really want to nitpick. The difference is not a big deal. The Galaxy's touchscreen is smooth and enjoyable to use, i've been swiping away and it keeps up well :-)

These quirks will probably be ironed out when Google releases Android 3.0 (codenamed Honeycomb) which is the Android os intended for tablets. I am going to install honeycomb on my Galaxy Tab as soon as its available.

One thing I think Steve Jobs is wrong on is the 7inch size. He dissed 7inch tablets pretty hard a couple months ago saying that they will be D.O.A. -- but after using the Galaxy Tab for a week i have come to appreciate the 7 inch size, its still portable enough that you dont mind taking it with you everywhere but the larger screen really is a treat to the eyes instead of squinting to read a smartphone screen.

I think the ideal would be to own a 10inch iPad2 and a 7inch Android tablet running Honeycomb. This way you get the best of both the Apple and Android worlds.

Im gonna wait and see what comes up next. The next gen Ipads may be cheaper and out due all of the Droid tablets..

Tough, because i use all Mac computers and my phone os a Droid. I am extremely happy with both. So we will see what improvements happen on both sides before i make a choice.

7" pads being obsolete? pfffft! 7" is perfect, not too big or too small. 10" will probably prevail, but that's not that bad either, honestly
