the only thing that relatively sucks about vbulletin is their official support - as the first thing the pricks ask you to do if ever you run into problems (which should be seldom) is to disable all plugins and switch to default theme... they won't support 3rd party plugins/etc...Comment

I used to run PHPBB years ago. Back then it was very complicated to install plugins and it was filled with security-holes. I switched over to MyBB and SMF and liked both of them better. But they're missing some features.

Many years ago doesn't count... phpbb2 sucked tremendously. phpbb3 is super ultrasonically way better than vbulletin, and I run both types of forums right now. Of course, this is my opinion... but try it out and see for yourself. I cannot say anything about vbulletin 4.0.
I cannot recommend Vbulletin 3.8. The templates are from the stone age. Everything is done with tables. It's very annoying.
And from what I;ve heard during the development phase of 4.0, everything is now done with CSS, which is not a good thing, either.---
