Board Admin - Some advice on Rep Points

We've had it on a board I admin for some time now. It does nothing but causes problems. So much so, we've implemented a month ban on anyone complaining about rep points.

But, if you are going to turn them on, also turn on negative rep points. What use is the rep system if you don't have the negative rep points on. We'd all love to be able to see the rep system show that the poster is an idiot/troll.

It says I Approve, or I Disapprove, so I assume the Disapprove thing is already negative rep in action.

I think if you reach a certain negative that you should be banned for a month, then forever.

yes, the system could be improved no doubt. most ppl here can't rep the other because of low post count.

the whole system should have been announced with policy in the first minute.

I am pretty sure that the reason is to keep up the high traffic epass caused... :P and make ppl post like crazy..

The problem with the rep system is that the more points you have, the more influential you get. One click on the rep from an influential person can ruin the rep for somebody who's starting out.
I am not saying that people should even care about it, but that's how it goes.

I don't think it's a good idea on a 'business' board, unless it was a system like ebay where it is based on business transactions,

although I know the use of it here is novelty, it is inevitable that some will misinterpret the meaning when looking for who to do business with or not, whether them or those they are promoting in their sigs or posts

I'm not sure if there are hooks to do this but it might be useful to tie it in so that someone with negative rep can post no more than one reply every five minutes or post one new topic per day. Might be helpful for dealing with "sig whores". As long as the restrictions aren't too bad it won't be a big deal for someone who gets dinged unjustly.

the only thing useful would be an etrader but since this place is kinda a cess pool everything gets abused hard.
