I heard Linux Mint is extremely easily to use and is good on old hardware.

Mint is very nice. I found it to be the most stable of the Ubuntu flavours.

          Go with Debian!

I run over 200 Debian servers and absolutely LOVE it. The package management ROCKS! I can setup a secure webhead with all needed services in less than 15 min ;)

Try that with other flavors :P I also tend to like their directory structure the best and default installation paths, etc...

It's nice. It is Ubuntu with a slightly different interface and codecs pre-installed. I like it for MythTV since everything just works right out of the "box." If you're doing a lot of multimedia type stuff, mint is awesome.

                It's very nice.
I tossed it on my GF's laptop, and the laptop of a friend's parents.

Everything works out of the box, and is very user friendly - package / application management is fantastic. It's definitely come a very, very long way.

Only up to the 'does the same basic task' stage. I mean, give me a fucking break:

                      Microsoft Visio to Dia
                      Adobe Dreamweaver to NVU
                      Adobe PhotoShop to GIMP

I think my favorite, though, is:

                      Authorize.net to OpenSSL

Hey, one's a payment gateway API, the other is an encryption protocol API, so...

Does that mean I can replace NetBilling with 3DES?

Been using linux since the early days, 1994, Im using Centos atm , I have tried out about 50+ distros, I love Ubunu and mint is cool but I have come to the conclusion that any distro claiming to be radically different are doing nothing more than providing a different set of applications and desktop backgrounds etc, If you are just messing around and geeking then use multi boot, you can run several distros along with your windows7 to see which you like best. and yes mint is cool but nothing too special.
