Depends if you need something that is usable from home and office, if so then a good laptop with desktop like features will do just fine (great for traveling too). If you want a permanent station then a desktop is a better/more efficient choice. Both have advantages and disadvantages so try to see which ones in your case outweigh the other and then go with it.
