the best one I have seen so far (probably also the most expensive) is spectorpro. It wont set off any alarms with avast antivirus and the reporting it does is very complete. It does phone home alot, which given the amount of information it has on hand is pretty scary, but aside from that it does its job very well.

Remember that 10 year olds are extremely smart when it comes to computers. Don't be surprised if he or she disables the keylogger or creates a fake keylog file.

You could try a hardware based keylogger, you can buy ones that look pretty much like a USB-PS/2 adapter.

if its really for a 10 year old eblaster will do just fine for you, you can even block certain IM's as well as modify the settings remotly, most apps do not detect eblaster and they are the most upto date.

Blazingtools Perfect Keylogger was doing for me great stuff couple years ago, however, most of antivirus software will scream unless you mark the process as safe... The alternative to avoid antyvirus alarm is to code a custom one.

im assuming the kid didnt use his money to buy it, just like employees if you own the machine you can do whatever you wish to it, when the feds want to wire up a motel room to bug it they either a) have to get a warrant or b) when working with a informant etc. they rent the room, they own it for that time and can wire it up and use it in court no warrant needed.

there is way more to the above but this should answer your question about the 10yr old. see in a netcafe they cant do this as you own the machine for the minutes you use it for.

Will the parents be proactively monitoring the log? Wouldn't it be better to have the kid using the PC in a safe location (eg an open family area of the house) so that Bad Things don't happen in the first place?

Also, if you are worried about triggering the AV, just set an exclusion within the AV program itself.
Hidden recorder is good but it shows HR.exe running in the processes list AND it actually puts itself in add/rem programs as hidden recorder. LoL over here. So you have to edit the registry and rename it something like High Quality Video Codec :D
